Recently, while hand-building some curious “小” website, I noticed that the ReadingTime method built into the Hugo generator — which returns the estimated reading time for a given page — isn’t very accurate for CJK languages. So I used the Plain method to get the rendered content of a given page, stripped out all the HTML tags, then used the strings.RuneCount function to get the character count of the given string, and divided that by 60 and 2 to get the reading time in minutes — in other words, reading two characters per second.

{{ div (div (.Plain | htmlUnescape | strings.RuneCount) 2) 60 }}
